As long as I can remember, I have never been able to abide abuses of power. Right is right; wrong us wrong. I was an advocate of the weak and outcast, grounded in strong ideals of right and wrong, rectification for its own sake, redemption as its own end.

Those who spend any time with me know within minutes that I am possibly the most ADHD person they ever met. And while I have no official autism diagnosis, since 2016 more and more people ask the autism question. And as one man said to me in 2022, if you’re not austistic, you’re sure in the zip code. Perhaps the fictional Adrian Monk is my doppelgänger.
Consistent with such perceptions, it won’t be too surprising that I earned a doctorate (the nutty professor kind, not the medical physician kind). I’m what is called “an expert“ on the Maya text known as Popol Vuh.
I suppose academic achievement does not mean much when it comes to speaking truth to power, but an earned Ph.D. is still a weighty credential that signals substantive discourse, and thus my words are not as easily dismissed by officials and journalists. But more than that, it is a credential that honed my critical analysis and disputation.
